About The Position

This role involves performing the duties of a Surgical Technologist, with specialized training in areas such as Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant, to be utilized daily in an inpatient setting. Staff are required to take specialty call for these teams based on their experience. For teams with separate specialty call schedules (e.g., Ophthalmology from Cross Creek), this role will be utilized for call hours as a Job 2. Key duties include coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs, preparing the surgical field and back table, assisting the surgeon at the field, and supporting other operating room staff. The position demands adherence to standards and guidelines from various industry agencies, including TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, and CDC. The ability to take call, including weekends, is essential.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in state prior to Jan. 1, 2008, OR have completed a ST military training program (in lieu of the education requirement).
  • Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020, without surgical tech certification that are grandfathered under state law are not required to obtain certification but are required to complete 15 hours annually of continuing ST education.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA; or may accept NCCT certification IF employed as a surgical tech in state prior to January 1, 2008 or has completed a surgical tech military training program.
  • Maintains surgical technology certification.
  • Ability to complete 15 hours of mandatory ST education annually required.
  • For CVOR: Ability to setup and scrub new technology procedures such as TAVR, LVAD, Impella, Ablation, Transmyocardio Laser, Assist Devices and Endovascular cases.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regard to cannulation of the patient.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up the back table, and arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case and surgeon's preference card.
  • Provides technical assistance with preparation of patient and any specialty equipment.
  • Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure.
  • Assists in maintaining correct surgical counts, identifies and cares for specimens, handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.
  • Maintains sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to accepted standards for provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment.
  • Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and terminally cleans at the end of the day.
  • Returns unused supplies and instruments and extra equipment to proper storage.
  • Models Prisma Health behavior expectations.
  • Assists with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned.
  • Trains and assists with integration of new team members.
  • Shares knowledge, ideas, and expertise to support the team and the department.
  • Maintains all responsibilities and performs all duties included in specialty team assignment, including separate call schedule and ongoing education as applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
