About The Position

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non-professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol. This role involves clinical practice, including demonstrating competency in procedures, participating in the nursing process, communicating with the Registered Nurse, gathering supplies and instruments, maintaining sterile technique, and circulating under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The technologist will also assist with anesthesia, prep surgical sites, position patients, prepare specimens, and accompany patients to PACU. Additionally, the role involves organizing and implementing a plan of care, documenting observations, and demonstrating knowledge of medication administration. Clinical leadership is also a component, including accepting responsibility for nursing activities, demonstrating judgment, serving as a preceptor, advocating for patients, and maintaining a safe surgical environment.

Requirements

1 to 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledgeable of Principles of Aseptic Technique
Ability to correlate clinical data with patient's medical and nursing care.
Ability to set priorities.
Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency.
Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, etc.
2 years of ortho scrub experience

Responsibilities

Provision of patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary for patient care.
Maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
Participating in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care.
Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care.
Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co-workers.
Utilizes appropriate lines of communication.
Utilizes appropriate technique intraoperatively by set up of needed items for patient care as well as demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
Gathering supplies, x-rays and instruments/equipment for cases.
Handles instruments appropriately.
Maintains strict sterile technique.
Demonstrates ability to circulate under direction of Registered Nurse by: Appraises cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment.
Sets up needed equipment pertinent to patient care.
Assists with anesthesia intraoperatively.
Carefully preps surgical site.
Assists in proper patient positioning.
Prepares and labels specimens correctly.
Accompanies patient and anesthesia staff to PACU.
Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
Under direction of Registered Nurse, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data.
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, implements, documents and evaluates the plan of care.
Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol.
Re-evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated.
Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room.
Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision making skills.
Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team.
Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his/her physical and psychological needs.
Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members.
Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.
