The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non-professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol. This role involves clinical practice, including demonstrating competency in procedures, participating in the nursing process, communicating with the Registered Nurse, gathering supplies and instruments, maintaining sterile technique, and circulating under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The technologist will also assist with anesthesia, prep surgical sites, position patients, prepare specimens, and accompany patients to PACU. Additionally, the role involves organizing and implementing a plan of care, documenting observations, and demonstrating knowledge of medication administration. Clinical leadership is also a component, including accepting responsibility for nursing activities, demonstrating judgment, serving as a preceptor, advocating for patients, and maintaining a safe surgical environment.
