Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. This role offers a hands-on learning environment with opportunities to enhance technical skills and grow professionally each day. A caregiver in this position can work days, nights or mid-shift, which on-call requirements. Start time options are 7:00AM, 11:00AM or 7:00PM. Shifts may be 8, 10 or 12-hours.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program
  • Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Responsibilities

  • Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.
  • Assist RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.
  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.
  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.
  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”
  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and give specimens to circulator for disposition.
