Surgical Technologist - General Surgery

The Surgical Technologist primarily functions in the scrub role, responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. This position requires knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques, adaptability to unpredictable situations in the perioperative setting, and an understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and technology as a member of the surgical team.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program.
- Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required within one year of hire date and maintained thereafter.
- Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers through the AHA or Red Cross.
- Current BLS certification required upon hire.
- Certification through NBSTSA required within one year of hire date.
Nice To Haves
- At least one year of surgical tech experience is preferred.
- Surgical Technologists hired at Mayo Clinic in Arizona prior to 11/20/2024 are not required to have a Surgical Technology certification through NBSTSA.
Responsibilities
- Provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon.
- Functions primarily in the scrub role.
- Responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
- Possesses knowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique.
- Able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting.
- Utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology as member of the surgical team.
