Surgical Technologists, sometimes referred to as scrub techs, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses and play a critical role in ensuring quality patient care and maintaining a sterile field. This role offers a hands-on learning environment with opportunities to enhance technical skills and grow professionally each day.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Responsibilities

  • preparing supplies and equipment
  • setting up sterile tables
  • performing surgical counts
  • draping the sterile field
  • passing instruments during procedures
  • preparing sterile dressings
  • cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.
  • Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.
  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.
  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.
  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”
  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition.
