The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non-professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol. This role involves participating in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completion of all activities according to established policy, procedure and protocol. The Surgical Technologist also demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co-workers, and utilizes appropriate lines of communication. Intraoperatively, the Surgical Technologist utilizes appropriate technique by setting up needed items for patient care and demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures, gathering supplies, x-rays, and instruments/equipment for cases, and handling instruments appropriately while maintaining strict sterile technique. The Surgical Technologist also demonstrates the ability to circulate under the direction of a Registered Nurse by appraising the cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment, setting up needed equipment pertinent to patient care, assisting with anesthesia intraoperatively, carefully prepping the surgical site, assisting in proper patient positioning, preparing and labeling specimens correctly, and accompanying the patient and anesthesia staff to the PACU. The Surgical Technologist demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures and, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized, timely, and integrated with the surgical plan of care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, implements, documents and evaluates the plan of care in a manner that reflects management of identified problems, observations of patient’s response to treatment, integration of physician’s orders into the plan, appropriate prioritization, and collaboration with physicians and other members of the team. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol, and re-evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated. In terms of clinical leadership, the Surgical Technologist accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room, demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision making skills, serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team, acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his/her physical and psychological needs, demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members, and creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.
