This role requires an individual to be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees. The Surgical Technologist demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment, principles of infection control and sterility, and uses this knowledge to assist the Registered Nurse and Surgeon in providing a safe surgical environment that supports quality patient care. Responsibilities include preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, performing scrub technician functions, assembling equipment, passing instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, assisting with counts, preparing and disposing of specimens, assisting with surgical dressings, ensuring availability of necessary instrumentation and equipment, assisting with patient transport and positioning, understanding and using appropriate sterilization methods, understanding the use and functioning of supplies and equipment, operating sterilizers, lights, suction, and diagnostic equipment, preparing and labeling medications under direction, assisting with patient transfer to recovery, and assisting with operating room turnover and restocking. The role also emphasizes respecting patient privacy, dignity, and safety, providing a safe environment, orienting new employees, understanding teamwork, and cooperating with the Registered Nurse to maintain equipment and instrumentation. The position also involves participating in staff meetings, in-service programs, and educational programs, and performing other assigned duties. Consistent service excellence is expected.
