About The Position

The PRN Surgical Technologist provides as-needed technical support for invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures in an operating room setting. Assists in facilitating safe and effective surgical procedures by ensuring the operating room environment is properly prepared, equipment functions appropriately, and sterile technique is maintained. The PRN Surgical Technologist performs duties in accordance with established clinical protocols, infection control standards, and patient safety guidelines while supporting the mission, vision, and values of MSRH. Supports surgical services based on variable scheduling, case volume, and operational demand. Work is performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and in collaboration with surgeons and the surgical team. The PRN role requires flexibility to work variable shifts, including on-call coverage and call-back as needed.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, sterile technique, and operating room protocols.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices, including decontamination, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and supplies.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a sterile field in accordance with established protocols for a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate the surgical team's needs, including instruments, supplies, and equipment for scheduled and emergent cases.
  • Assist with patient positioning and maintain a safe surgical environment.
  • Ability to participate in surgical counts with the circulating nurse to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Identify and report equipment issues, safety concerns, or supply needs.
  • Adapt to variable schedules, case volume, and changing surgical demands typical of PRN assignments.
  • Document and follow established procedures related to sterilization, specimen handling, and supply usage.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the mission, vision, and values of MSRH through safe, patient-centered care.
  • Graduation from a surgical tech program required
  • CST required

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures, including equipment setup, instrumentation, and sterile field preparation.
  • Maintain sterile technique throughout surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team to support efficient procedure flow.
  • Participate in surgical counts with the circulating nurse to ensure accuracy of instruments, sponges, and supplies.
  • Assist with patient positioning and ensure appropriate safety measures are implemented.
  • Label medications and specimens on the sterile field in accordance with protocols and surgeon preferences.
  • Support proper handling, cleaning, and processing of instruments and equipment following procedures.
  • Identify and report equipment malfunctions, supply needs, or safety concerns.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation related to procedures, sterilization, and supply usage as required.
  • Assist in room turnover, including cleaning, restocking, and preparation for subsequent procedures.
  • Comply with all infection control, regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on operational needs.
