About The Position

The OR Tech (ORT) II performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. It is expected that the ORT II will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined. This position could be filled as a Surgical Tech II or Surgical Tech III depending on experience and qualifications. Scheduling Details PRN/Variable. Shifts can be 10 or 12 hours to help fill in with scheduling gaps. Essential Functions Performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. It is expected that the ORT II will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined. Has accountability for ensuring the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria. This person maintains the sterile field and a safe environment. The tech recognizes and addresses sharps and fire safety processes. Prepares the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure. The ORT II may assist with sterile processing. This tech will assist the surgeon(s) during the procedure but stays within the ORT scope of practice. Can identify emergency situations and exercise judgement when implementing procedures to respond to emergencies. On completion of the procedure, the tech will assist with room turnover, cleaning, and prepare for the next procedure. Is expected to participate in training and mentoring. This is separate from the clinical coach role (i.e. students, orderlies, etc.). This person will also provide or assist with at least one educational offering or a short-term project per year to the department under the direction of the OR Manager (i.e. skills lab, in-services, equipment review, x-ray gown inventory etc.) Has a pathway opportunity identified for advancement to ORT III.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) program, or: Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months (not eligible for Tech in Surgery exam), or Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital/military surgical services within the last three years, or Hired for on-the-job training in a rural hospital, or International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Competent in basic procedures and two or more specialty areas/facility case mix.
  • Able to take assigned call.
  • Must be in good standing.
  • Colorado Surgical Technologists must be registered to practice as a Surgical Technologists with the State of Colorado.
  • Competent in Basic Procedures and 2 or more specialty areas such as (Ortho, Robotics, Neuro, CV, Trauma, Transplant, Re-implants) and/or facility case mix.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association

Nice To Haves

  • Active National Certification as an ORT in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist.

  • Assists with room turnover, cleaning, and prepares for the next procedure upon completion of the procedure.
  • Participates in training and mentoring (separate from clinical coach role).
  • Provides or assists with at least one educational offering or a short-term project per year to the department under the direction of the OR Manager.
  • Has a pathway opportunity identified for advancement to ORT III.
