About The Position

This role facilitates the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures through compliance with applicable policies, procedures, surgical protocols, and principles of asepsis. The Surgical Technologist prepares the surgical suite, manages instruments and supplies, and assists with patient preparation and positioning. They are responsible for maintaining knowledge and skills, precepting new staff, and functioning as a superuser for selected medical equipment. This position requires flexibility with workdays and participation in on-call rotations for weekends, holidays, and weeknights. Specifically for Maternity Services, the role involves providing direct patient care, including routine hygienic, nutritional, and comfort needs, as well as performing basic nursing support tasks such as obtaining vital signs and answering call lights. The technologist may also assist with room cleanliness and provide sitter observation when needed. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program
  • Basic Life Safety (American Heart Association)
  • Surgical Technologist certification required within one (1) year of hire to the position.
  • NRP within six (6) months of hire (Maternity Unit specific requirement)
  • Clinical rotations completed in an acute care multispecialty operating room setting

  • One (1) year clinical experience in general, obstetric, gyn, ENT, orthopedics and peripheral vascular surgery

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures through compliance with applicable policies procedures, surgical protocols, and principles of asepsis.
  • Prepare surgical operating suite with sterile drapes and sterile solutions as well as appropriate sterile and non-sterile instruments and supplies.
  • Hand required/requested instruments and supplies to surgeon during surgery while maintaining a sterile field.
  • Assist with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients.
  • Maintain instruments in an organized manner and monitor/track instrument counts throughout procedures.
  • Remain current and competent in knowledge and skills necessary to meet the responsibility of the position and take initiative to inquire and explore new surgical procedures and subjects relating to the surgical patient and operating room environment.
  • Precept new and tenured staff and surgical technology students as requested.
  • Function as a superuser of selected medical equipment.
  • Maintain flexibility with workdays and serve on call for rotating weekend, holiday and weeknights as needed.
  • Provide patient care in the provision of routine hygienic, nutritional, and comfort needs of patients such as, but not limited to: bathing, distributing fluids and nourishments, feeding, ambulating, changing bed linens, oral care, grooming, shampooing hair, toileting, etc.
  • Perform basic nursing support tasks such as but not limited to: obtaining vital signs, answering call lights, transporting (i.e. patients, specimens, etc.), assisting with patient transfers, and range of motion.
  • May assist with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly as well as provide observation as a sitter when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
