The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. This role primarily functions in the scrub role, responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. The Surgical Technologist must possess knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique and be able to adapt to unpredictable situations in the perioperative setting, utilizing knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and instrumentation as a member of the surgical team. Candidates may be considered for either the Surgical Technologist or Advanced Surgical Technologist role based on experience and specialty training. The Advanced Surgical Technologist supports complex procedures like cardiothoracic, transplant, neurosurgery, and vascular, and contributes to protocol development, specialty instrumentation management, and workflow optimization. Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet a 45-minute on-call requirement.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program.
Current BLS certification required upon hire.
Certification through NBSTSA required within one year of hire date (with exceptions for specific locations and hire dates prior to 11/20/2024 in Mayo Clinic Arizona).
Minimum 2+ years of independent scrubbing experience (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Independently supports advanced procedures in one of the following specialties: cardiac, transplant, neurosurgery, or vascular, or has cross-trained to work independently in three or more specialties outside of these advanced areas (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).

Responsibilities

Provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon.
Functions primarily in the scrub role, responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
Utilizes knowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique.
Adapts to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting.
Utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology as a member of the surgical team.
Supports complex procedures, such as cardiothoracic, transplant, neurosurgery, and vascular (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Contributes to protocol development, specialty instrumentation management, and workflow optimization for advanced surgical service lines (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Manages and maintains advanced specialty instrumentation and equipment (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Contributes to protocol and workflow development for new procedures and technologies (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Demonstrates the ability to be prepared to handle emergencies that may include quick thinking, adaptability, and solid skills to implement emergency protocols (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
Works flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call expectations (for Advanced Surgical Technologist role).
