The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies, utilizing knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques, and adapting to unpredictable situations in the perioperative setting. A strong understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation is essential as a member of the surgical team.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program.
- Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required within one year of hire date and maintained thereafter.
- Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
- Current BLS certification required upon hire.
- Certification through NBSTSA required within one year of hire date.
Nice To Haves
- Surgical Technologists hired at Mayo Clinic in Arizona prior to 11/20/2024, are not required to have a Surgical Technology certification through NBSTSA.
Responsibilities
- Provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon.
- Functions primarily in the scrub role.
- Responsible for selecting, preparing, and maintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
- Utilizes knowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique.
- Able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting.
- Utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology as a member of the surgical team.
