About The Position

Surgical Technologists perform a variety of tasks in an operating room and assist the surgical team. This includes arranging sterile setups for surgical procedures, passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to surgeons and surgical assistants, preparing sterile supplies, assisting in the cleanup of the operating room, checking the placement and operation of equipment, and checking and restocking the operating room. During surgical procedures, they may be responsible for special trays, grafting materials, and patient data recording. They also perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Graduate of Surgical Technologist Training Program; or equivalent
  • Knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • High School Diploma; or equivalent experience
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Responsibilities

  • Complies with established policies and procedures related to work schedule.
  • Develops a plan that prescribes actions to achieve patient goals.
  • Assists with positioning patient properly for surgery.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of responsibilities regarding anesthesia administration.
  • Complies with safety and emergency procedures consistent with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of different methods of sterilization.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub, sterile gowning and gloving.
  • Creates and maintains sterile field.
  • Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs.
  • Performs counts.
  • Monitors and controls the environment.
  • Respects patient's rights.
  • Performs actions that demonstrate accountability.
  • Performs in role of specialty service (Ortho, Neuro, Pediatric, OHNS, Plastic Reconstructive, cardiothoracic, Vascular, GU, GYN and oncological specialties) technologist under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor.
  • Actively participate in quality of care endeavors and the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Participates in staff training and development.
  • Customer service is essential, inclusive of patients, co-worker, surgeons, sales representatives and other guests.
  • Others duties as assigned.
