This role requires a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique and its application. The Surgical Technologist IV assists in obtaining and organizing supplies and instruments before, during, and after surgical procedures. They are responsible for cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization. This position supports the Registered Nurse circulator in patient preparation, assembly of supplies, instruments, and equipment, and the proper disposition of all specimens. They also assist with all aspects of room turnover. This role is assigned to heightened specialized procedures including neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, and robotics. Duties are performed according to department policy and procedure. The technologist monitors surgical supplies and instrumentation for sterility prior to use, ensures judicious use of supplies, and accurate documentation of charges. They monitor and document sterilization activities for completion. The role involves attending in-services/staff meetings, demonstrating knowledge of current department issues, and participating in the Performance Improvement Process. Educational opportunities are utilized to increase competency and meet personal needs and goals. The technologist may assist in the development of policies, procedures, and standards, serve as a preceptor, and act as a clinical resource to others. They may assume responsibility for individual specified unit clinical projects and oversee service lines as needed.
