About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care – Medical Center North Liberty OR is seeking a full-time Surgical Technologist II. Under the direction of Staff Nurses, the position assists with surgical procedures and therapeutic, preventive, and emergency patient care. The technologist prepares, operates, and maintains routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants. The role prepares the surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team. It includes supporting patient care across ages and conditions, maintaining the sterile field, using aseptic technique, and collaborating with nurses, surgeons, and other team members. The Surgical Technologist II also precepts and mentors students and new staff, contributes to committees and perioperative initiatives, and helps maintain procedure-related documentation, care plans, specialty equipment, and supplies. This is a full-time position at Medical Center North Liberty, scheduled for 100%. Shifts are 10 hours, rotating between 0645 and 1715, primarily Monday through Friday, with a rotating day off, weekly shift extensions, and occasional weekends and holidays as needed. Hourly pay is $25.98 to commensurate. Qualified candidates may be eligible for a sign-on incentive of up to $5,000; current UI employees are not eligible.

Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA or NCCT.
Two years of Surgical Technologist experience.

Responsibilities

Prepare the surgical area for patient care and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
Assist with surgical procedures and therapeutic, preventive, and emergency patient care.
Prepare, operate, and maintain routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants.
Apply knowledge of emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
Maintain medical and surgical asepsis, recognize and communicate breaks in aseptic technique, and follow standard infection-control precautions.
Provide proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies, and implants.
Anticipate surgical equipment and advanced instrumentation needs to support the flow of procedures.
Perform delegated technical functions and clinical activities in accordance with institutional policies.
Facilitate patient care in consideration of the patient's condition and age.
Collaborate with peers on surgical patient-care decisions, maintain the sterile field, and report incidents to the surgeon.
Review pertinent patient information collaboratively to confirm procedure accuracy and preparedness.
Assist with revising or updating care plans and developing plans for new procedures or surgeons.
Organize and review instrument trays and supply shelves; organize and maintain trial or specialty equipment, supplies, and instruments.
Use critical thinking to anticipate patient and surgeon needs, take preventive action on potential problems or complications, and report unusual incidents.
Document care according to department or division standards in conjunction with the Registered Nurse.
Perform computer functions within the scope defined by the supported unit or units.
Precept students, new staff, and student technologists in scrubbing duties; mentor new employees and other surgical team members.
Participate in and contribute to staff meetings, in-service programs, perioperative initiatives, and shared governance committees.
Complete daily unit documentation and tasks, including case reviews for procedures, implants, and supplies.
Communicate with surgeons regarding implants, instruments, and supplies for future cases.
Organize or revise specialty carts, care plans, and service-line information.
Organize and provide specialty in-services.
Perform other assigned special projects and tasks.
