About The Position

Performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing, and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity. Assists with surgical cases in all surgical specialties.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist OR applicable surgical technologist course of study
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association
  • Frequent call-back

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care.
  • Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure.
  • Inspects equipment for proper working condition.
  • Maintains sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure.
  • Prepares for specialty cases and maintains up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques.
  • Participates in time out/sign out processes.
  • Maintains the sterile field during the procedure.
  • Follows principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines.
  • Screbs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon.
  • Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing).
  • Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field.
  • Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assists the operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers.
  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure.
  • Stores and stocks supplies as needed.
  • Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead.
  • Assists with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia.
  • Participates in assigned on call activities.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
