The Surgical Technologist II specializes in a surgical specialty area, serving as a resource and assisting with complex surgical cases. This role involves setting up and operating various equipment according to physician specifications, maintaining specialty carts, and ensuring the completeness and availability of supplies. The Surgical Technologist II also precepts Surgical Technologists I, anticipates their needs, and intervenes when appropriate. A key responsibility is maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient environment conducive to optimal patient care by applying knowledge of aseptic surgical technique. This includes preparing materials, supplies, and equipment, assisting with gowning and gloving, preparing the surgical area, maintaining a sterile field, anticipating surgeon's needs, passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors, observing for breaks in aseptic technique, and assisting in maintaining a clear surgical field. The technologist performs all types of procedures, maintains knowledge of various procedures, and ensures the environmental disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room. This includes setting up the room, moving equipment, and returning it post-procedure. Adherence to infection control policies and notification of equipment/supply problems are also required. The role involves patient positioning and transporting duties, which may require lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique. Serving as a Second Assistant and assisting in the instrument room with cleaning and wrapping instruments are also part of the duties. The technologist must demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, understanding growth and development principles and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
