About The Position

Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Maintains accountability for the provision of surgical instruments to the surgical team. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards. The Surgical Technologist II plays a vital role in supporting surgical procedures by providing skilled assistance to surgeons and the operating room team. This position is responsible for maintaining sterile technique, preparing and managing surgical instruments and equipment, and ensuring efficient coordination of patient care throughout the surgical process. The Surgical Technologist II demonstrates a commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and excellence in accordance with our mission, values, and service standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Proof of education may be required upon hire.
  • Surgical technology experience required.
  • Non-certified applicants with relevant surgical technology experience will be considered.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Ability to understand, speak, read, and write English.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Nice To Haves

  • Surgical Technologist certification preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and operative team members while maintaining sterile technique and patient comfort.
  • Assist surgeons efficiently, professionally, and courteously during procedures.
  • Utilize knowledge of surgical procedures and preference cards to ensure appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are available.
  • Participate in updating and maintaining surgeon preference cards.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with the surgical team to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Maintain patient rights, dignity, confidentiality, and safety at all times.
  • Inspect instruments, power equipment, and surgical tools prior to procedures to ensure proper functionality.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and promptly remove defective instruments or equipment from service.
  • Perform or assist with sterile preparation procedures while monitoring aseptic practices throughout surgery.
  • Immediately identify and address breaks in sterile technique.
  • Manage contaminated instruments and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization using point-of-use cleaning practices throughout procedures.
  • Prepare equipment, instruments, and supplies for efficient utilization.
  • Ensure unused supplies are handled according to departmental procedures.
  • Complete room turnover and terminal cleaning activities in compliance with department standards.
  • Utilize downtime effectively by restocking rooms, preparing for upcoming cases, and assisting team members as needed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in assignments, workload, and scheduling changes.
  • Effectively communicate anticipated needs to the circulating nurse and surgical team.
  • Recognize and promptly report emergency situations.
  • Verify specimen identification and disposition with physicians and communicate information appropriately.
  • Communicate schedule changes, delays, or early procedure completion to support efficient room utilization.
  • Report equipment and instrument issues and facilitate repair requests according to policy.
  • Demonstrate competency in operating and maintaining routine surgical equipment and technology.
  • Assemble and manage specialty instrumentation and equipment, including retractors and powered surgical devices.
  • Assist in evaluating new products, equipment, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete required documentation to support purchasing and process improvement decisions.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize work activities effectively.
  • Deliver high-quality work in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and conserve resources.
  • Support departmental staffing and operational needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
