About The Position

To assist the surgical team, under the direction of a professional nurse, in providing skilled care for any patient undergoing surgical procedures. This role involves demonstrating proficient clinical skills in the scrub role, handling instruments/equipment in the OR, and maintaining aseptic technique. The Surgical Technologist II is expected to learn new procedures and instrumentation, provide feedback on preference cards, and adhere to safety rules. They must respond appropriately to crisis situations, participate in care planning for various patient age groups, and function effectively as a team member. Communication with patients, families, employees, and physicians is essential, as is acting as a preceptor for new employees. Reporting unsafe activities is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program for any employee hired after 2009.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to scrub responsibilities for the care of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in the OR.
  • Ability to act independently within established procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to perform specific unit tasks as assigned by the RN.
  • Ability to exercise judgement, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to make decisions utilizing sound judgement.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to utilize computer and keyboard.
  • BCLS certification.
  • Certification by an approved certification body i.e. the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (CST), and National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (TS-C).

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficient clinical skills in the scrub role.
  • Demonstrates ability to scrub on a wide range of procedures.
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the handling of instruments/equipment in the OR and aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates openness to learning scrub techniques for new procedures and new instrumentation/equipment and receiving feedback concerning clinical skills.
  • Actively works with leadership to identify own learning needs and seeks opportunities to meet these learning needs.
  • Provides ongoing feedback to Assistant Nurse Manager concerning preference cards and tray contents.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing concern for safety by adhering to established safety rules and practices.
  • Responds appropriately to crisis situations as outlined in unit specific standards, initiates interventions within scope of responsibility and notifies circulating RN of all issues.
  • Participates in the planning of care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development.
  • Functions as an effective team member, supporting the concept of team training.
  • Actively participates in unit activities.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, employees, and physicians, both verbally and in writing.
  • Acts as a preceptor for new employees in specific areas of expertise to improve clinical practice.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
