About The Position

Performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity. Assist with surgical cases in all surgical specialties.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist OR applicable surgical technologist course of study Required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association Required
  • Frequent call-back Required

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care
  • Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure
  • Inspects equipment for proper working condition
  • Maintain sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure
  • Prepare for specialty cases and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques
  • Participate in time out/sign out processes
  • Maintains the sterile field during the procedure
  • Follow principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines
  • Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon
  • Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing)
  • Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed
  • Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field
  • Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers
  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure
  • Store and stock supplies as needed
  • Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead
  • Assist with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia
  • Participates in assigned on call activities
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job
