Requirements

  • Vocational/Technical Diploma (Minimum)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) (Minimum)

  • 1 year of experience in surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the first scrub role in basic surgical procedures.
  • Get the operating room and sterile field ready for surgical procedures by performing a surgical scrub and putting on OR attire and PPE.
  • Set up sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique, ensuring all instruments function properly and are accurately sterilized.
  • Maintain the availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
  • Help team members with gowning, gloving, and draping the patient, setting up and preserving the sterile field.
  • Perform intraoperative counts of instruments, sponges, and needles, and label all medications.
  • Participate in the surgical site and patient verification during the “Time Out” process.
  • Assist the surgeon by passing supplies, equipment, and instruments, sponging or suctioning at the operative site, preparing and cutting suture material, and handling specimens.
  • Control and maintain perioperative environments, ensuring asepsis, electrical safety, waste management, and accurate traffic patterns.
  • Demonstrate clinical proficiency and technical skills for both general and special populations.
  • Assist the RN in implementing the plan of care for each patient, prioritizing duties, physician requests, and interdepartmental procedures as directed.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, recognize malfunctions, and initiate repairs appropriately.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization post-surgery, assist in storing and stocking supplies, and update surgeons’ preference lists as needed.
  • Support the surgical team by cleaning the operating room after surgery is finished.
  • Observe patients for fall risks and take action to prevent falls.
  • Improve the accuracy of patient identification by using two identifiers when transporting patients between units/departments.
