Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses. In the role of the First Assist, responsibilities include assisting with positioning, prepping and draping, providing exposure through retraction, suctioning, and sponging techniques, performing dissection to provide exposure to the operative area, providing homeostasis using various methods, performing knot tying, providing closure of layers under the direction of the surgeon, affixing and stabilizing drains, applying surgical dressings, and removing drains during the postoperative phase upon surgeon order.
