About The Position

Sets up tables and prepares room for surgical procedures. Ensures sufficient sterile supplies and instruments on the unit. Performs transport duties.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited operating room technology program, required.
  • Certification from an accredited Surgical Technology program, required.
  • Previous experience in a clinical/medical related position, required.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and directs them to proper treatment area. Facilitates patient flow in a cordial and professional manner.
  • Assists with communication between patients, nurses, clerks and physicians within department. Informs patient’s families of patient status and location.
  • Informs clinical supervisor of all new admissions, activities, and issues.
  • Provides patient transport to appropriate patient care unit, as needed.
  • Transports specimens, equipment, and other supplies, as needed.
  • Keeps unit clear of stretchers and equipment to maintain a safe and orderly environment for patients.
  • Obtains base line vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, etc.). Records and verbally reports results to Registered Nurse.
  • Provides patient care duties including, but not limited to, positioning, breathing techniques, toileting, perineal care, and linen change.
  • Empties foley catheters and reports output to Registered Nurse.
  • Gathers and sets up instruments, supplies and equipment needed for defined surgical procedure utilizing aseptic technique.
  • Inspects sterile equipment to be used during surgery. Assists in gowning and gloving surgeons.
  • Drapes patients or assists clinicians with draping.
  • Assists Anesthesiologist with patient positioning, as directed by Registered Nurse.
  • Anticipates surgeon’s needs for instrumentation, sponges, sutures, and suction tubes and places them in surgeon’s hands.
  • Handles and prepares specimens and cultures obtained during surgery.
  • Maintains the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field throughout surgery. Maintains isolation precautions as indicated in infection control policy.
  • Ensures proper care and handling of all equipment, instrumentation, sutures and needles, before during and after surgical procedure.
  • Counts sponges, needles and instruments, as directed by Registered Nurse.
  • Observes patient after procedure is completed, before transport to recovery room.
  • Maintains supply levels in all department areas (triage, operating rooms, utility room and equipment carts).
  • Performs related duties as required.
