About The Position

Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience or graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing
  • Either prior operating room experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program; or graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing
  • BLS
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

  • Performs care for patient safety and well-being.
  • Able to scrub any procedure in primary cluster skillfully.
  • Able to operate all equipment in primary cluster.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate computer by correct data entry.
  • Follows established standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates flexibility.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and participates in specialty area.
  • Maintains certification (when appropriate).
  • Cooperates with other departments and their needs in the interest of patient care.
  • Works closely with ACU and PACU, and attempts to assist them when requested.
  • Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Reports risk management concerns.
  • Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements: Safety/Fire, Blood Borne Pathogen, Hazardous Communication, TB, Department Specific, Age Appropriate Care.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Demonstrates care and courtesy.
  • Provides prompt, respectful, courteous service.
  • Meets physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families.
  • Responds to patients needs promptly.

  • Attends annual age-specific in-service.
  • Neonatal/Infant care: Infant totally dependent on care giver, Keeps safe.
  • Child care: Explains procedures in language understood by child, Comforts child and stands by for induction to anesthesia, Maintains a quiet atmosphere during induction and awakening stages of anesthesia, Provides warmed blanket to maintain body temperature, Utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size.
  • Adolescent care: Involves patient in discussion of procedure, Maintains privacy and confidentiality.
  • Adult care: Culturally specific care, Maintain privacy and confidentiality, Utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size, Maintains safe environment.
  • Geriatric care: Respectful, addresses by title and family name unless otherwise instructed not to, Provides warmed blanket, Protects skin with additional padding if needed, Involves patient in planning process and discharge planning.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
