About The Position

The Surgical Technician demonstrates a clear understanding of sterile techniques and maintains a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of special procedures. This position is located in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, a Level III Perinatal Center. The unit provides comprehensive patient-centered obstetrical nursing care for low and high-risk families during the antenatal, labor and delivery, and immediate postpartum periods. The unit consists of twenty-eight (28) Labor and Delivery Rooms (LDRs) designed to allow families to remain together during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. The Labor and Delivery unit provides care for mothers in active labor, inductions, immediate postpartum recovery, immediate newborn care, complications of pregnancy, and medical terminations of pregnancy. A 24-hour Anesthesia service is available for pain management and anesthesia during cesarean births.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology training program; or Orlando Health Training Program; or An accredited physician assistant program.
  • Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews preferences and verifies the case cart thoroughly before the procedure.
  • Maintains an orderly surgical field and consistently passes instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
  • Anticipates and prioritizes the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
  • Takes part in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as dictated by the procedure.
  • Maintains surgical specimens in a manner that identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
