About The Position

The Surgical Technician PRN delivers safe patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure. This role involves preparing for surgical procedures by ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available, setting up sterile tables, assisting with draping, passing instruments to the surgeon, maintaining sterile technique, preparing dressings, and assisting with cleaning and room preparation for subsequent patients. The technician is also responsible for handling specimens, performing counts with the circulator, participating in procedural checks, and assuming other related responsibilities as assigned. The role requires knowledge of disease processes, perioperative care, hospital organization, universal precautions, and maintaining a safe environment. Essential skills include excellent interpersonal communication, the ability to scrub various orthopedic cases, enforce aseptic technique, and provide excellent customer service. The position demands strong attention to detail, physical stamina for long work hours, the ability to manage stress and mental fatigue, flexibility in scheduling, and the capacity to multitask and support teammates. The working environment is a normal and emergent clinical setting with potential exposure to various hazards, and requires good visual acuity, the ability to transfer patients over 100 pounds, and perform various physical movements.

Requirements

High school diploma/GED is required.
Prior experience as an Surgical Technician is required.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competencies necessary to make appropriate clinical decisions.
Knowledge and understanding of disease processes and perioperative care.
Knowledge of hospital organization, universal precautions, and maintenance of a safe environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing and the skill to listen.
Able to scrub a variety of orthopedic cases including but not limited to, total joint replacement, total joint revisions, spine procedures, and sports medicine.
Able to practice and enforce proper aseptic technique in an OR environment.
Skills required to provide excellent customer service not only to our patients, but physicians, visitors, and other health care teammates, promoting a positive work environment.
Must have a strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long arduous work hours.
Ability to work in an environment that frequently produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue, and a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule as needed.
Ability to multi-task and manage multiple work priorities and support to teammates.
Good visual acuity, accurate color vision.
Ability to transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size, and shape.
Ability to speak and hear.

Nice To Haves

Surgical Technologist certification is preferred.
Prior experience as an Orthopedics OR Surgical Technician is preferred.

Responsibilities

Delivers safe patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure.
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure, and prepares for scheduled future cases by obtaining, supplies and equipment and placing on case cart.
Scrubs, gowns and gloves prior to surgical procedure per hospital policy, and gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants for procedure.
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure and opens sterile supplies.
Helps in draping sterile field.
Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure and anticipates what will be needed.
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
Prepares sterile dressings.
Assists with housekeeping tasks and sterile processing department as necessary to provide a safe environment for patients, teammates, physicians, guests.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
Assists in prepping room for the next patient.
Properly handles and cares for specimens.
Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
Participates in procedural checks, time out, and surgical site identification according to hospital policy and procedure and must demonstrate current competencies for job position.
Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.
