About The Position

This role is responsible for delivering safe patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure. The Surgical Technician will check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, prepare for scheduled future cases by obtaining supplies and equipment, and place them on the case cart. They will also scrub, gown, and glove prior to surgical procedures per hospital policy, and gown and glove the surgeon and assistants. The technician will set up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions, open sterile supplies, and assist in draping the sterile field. During the procedure, they will pass instruments to the surgeon, anticipate needs, and maintain sterile technique. Post-procedure, they will prepare sterile dressings, assist with housekeeping tasks and sterile processing, clean and prepare instruments for sterilization, and assist with terminal cleaning of the room. The role also involves prepping the room for the next patient, properly handling specimens, performing counts with the circulator, and participating in procedural checks, time outs, and surgical site identification. Additional responsibilities include assuming other related duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED is required.
  • Prior experience as an Surgical Technician is required.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competencies necessary to make appropriate clinical decisions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of disease processes and perioperative care.
  • Knowledge of hospital organization, universal precautions, and maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing and the skill to listen.
  • Able to scrub a variety of orthopedic cases including but not limited to, total joint replacement, total joint revisions, spine procedures, and sports medicine.
  • Able to practice and enforce proper aseptic technique in an OR environment.
  • Skills required to provide excellent customer service not only to our patients, but physicians, visitors, and other health care teammates, promoting a positive work environment.
  • Must have a strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long arduous work hours.
  • Ability to work in an environment that frequently produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue, and a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule as needed.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple work priorities and support to teammates.

Nice To Haves

  • Surgical Technologist certification is preferred.
  • Prior experience as an Orthopedics OR Surgical Technician is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
  • Assists in prepping room for the next patient.
  • Properly handles and cares for specimens.
  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Participates in procedural checks, time out, and surgical site identification according to hospital policy and procedure and must demonstrate current competencies for job position.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.
