About The Position

The Surgical Technologist First Assistant (STFA) is responsible for providing assistance to surgeon and under his/her direction and supervision. The STFA participates in the care of the surgical patient with primary emphasis on the intraoperative phase of care. The STFA assists the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of care by maintaining hemostasis, utilizing the Electro-surgical unit, clamping, cauterizing, ligating, and suturing tissue. The STFA maintains visualization of the surgical field through manipulation and retraction of tissue. The STFA inserts trocars and instruments, handles body tissue, and sutures including the closure of tissue planes. The STFA secure drains and apply splints and casts. The STFA functions as an extension of the surgeon at the sterile field during robotic procedures. The ability to perform all surgical activities including but not limited to those listed above, are based on the granting of privileges by the Board of Directors at the recommendation of the Chief of Surgery and the Medical Staff Credentialing Committee.

Requirements

  • Graduate of approved school of Surgical Technology.
  • Successful completion and documentation of a Surgical First Assistant Program as set forth by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA), or other approved accrediting body.
  • Certification as a First Assistant required
  • Minimum of 2 years of Operating Room Experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist
  • Minimum of six months experience as a First Assistant
  • [Ohio, United States] Certified First Assistant
  • Successful completion of the examination by one of the below entities: CSA: administered by the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) OR CSFA: administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • BLS certification - Required

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer a minimum of six months experience as a First Assistant

Responsibilities
