About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team at the Abington campus, committed to patient- and family-centered care. This role involves performing specific tasks to assist the surgical team, valuing individual uniqueness and addressing the diverse needs of patients. The CST is responsible for creating and maintaining the sterile field, accurately and efficiently anticipating surgeon's needs by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy, and surgeon's preferences. The technician works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care of surgical patients. Additionally, the Certified Surgical Technician supports the decontamination and sterile supply area, maintains professional interactions with patients and staff, and is required to precept other team members.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Graduate of a surgical technician training program.
  • Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Uses the language of partnership with patients and families, engaging them in their health and health care.
  • Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards, policies and procedures relevant to function and organization.
  • Knowledge of the physical environment and full spectrum of activities in developing and maintaining physical facilities.
  • Knowledge of the risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment, and the ability to take steps to reduce these risks.
  • Knowledge of the common types of equipment or devices used in the healthcare industry, and the ability to use these in patient care.
  • Knowledge of surgical assistance techniques and ability to successfully complete surgical procedures in compliance with applicable health and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate policies, procedures and management methods to maximize operating room efficiency and productivity.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support AHA - American Heart Association
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • TS-C - Certified Tech in Surgery - National Center for Competency Testing

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values.
  • Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners.
  • Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures.
  • Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting.
  • Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon.
  • Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity.
  • Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure.
  • Counts all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to, during and after the surgical procedure.
  • Follows the policy on how counts are performed, and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations.
  • Helps maintain a safe, neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room.
  • Acts as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed
