We are currently seeking a passionate individual who is eager to make a difference in a dynamic healthcare environment. Assist the surgeon(s) by providing basic instrumentation and sterile techniques for procedures performed in the Operating Room and provide patient care in the clinical setting. The Surgical Tech II is also responsible for the care, handling and maintenance of basic surgical equipment and instrumentation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of surgical technologist program
  • Certification from NBSTSA or NCCT within 1 year of hire or transfer
  • BLS from the American Heart Association
  • Minimum of 6 months surgical technologist experience
  • Strong working knowledge of patient care and basic human needs throughout the life span.
  • In depth knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong working knowledge of acute and chronic disease processes.
  • Knowledge of computer programs used in perioperative services.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and communicates in a professional manner with all members of the healthcare team
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn new methods, procedures and techniques resulting from departmental or organization change.
  • Adapts quickly and easily to change and adjusted behavior and approach to work when necessary to achieve goals.

  • 3-5 years of working experience as a cardiothoracic-vascular surgical technologist and assistant in a specialty line (Cardiology, Neurology, or Orthopedics)

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care under the supervision of a licensed provider and Registered Nurse in accordance with the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), Association of Surgical Technologist (AST) standards, and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Follows correct infection control practices including, but not limited to correct wearing of surgical attire and use of PPE, hand washing practices and scrub practices.
  • Ensures effective and safe care for patients by complying with organizational staffing and scheduling guidelines such as: attendance, floating, mandatory overtime, on-call, holiday coverage and disaster response.
  • Actively performs tasks that support as well as adherence to efficiency expectations of the unit to include but not limited to on-time first case starts and room turnover times.
  • Demonstrates the application of cardiothoracic-vascular surgical technologist skills.
  • Demonstrates proactive preparation for cardiothoracic-vascular procedures by obtaining the correct supplies and instrument prior to the surgical procedure.
  • Anticipates needs during the surgical procedure based upon the patient assessment, cardiothoracic-vascular knowledge, procedure performed and physician preference.
  • Demonstrates the application of basic surgical technologist skill for all surgical specialties.
  • Demonstrates the proper handling, cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization techniques of instrumentation as provided by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), manufacturer's instructions for use and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrates responsibility in following through with instrument concerns to include but not limited to missing, broken, and required instrumentation.
  • Complies with patient safety goals and programs as defined in hospital policies and procedures such as accurate identification of patients; communication amongst care givers during handoff, timeout and debriefing; fire risk reduction protocol; medication administration; patient positioning and prepping; specimen management; counts; infection control; and accurate documentation.
  • Monitors sterile technique throughout surgical procedure, identifies any deviation from the standard of care and communicates with all team members.
  • Adheres to all organizational polices to include but not limited to: attire, time and attendance, cell phone, electronic media, social media, and parking.
  • Proactively maintains current certifications and competencies participating in continuing education.
  • Attends required safety training programs, weekly meetings and in-services.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and or instruments.
  • Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, quality improvement teams (QITs), and root cause analyses (RCAs) as necessary.
  • Supports research and the implementation of evidenced based best practices.
  • Participates in peer interviewing and peer reviews as requested.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor within job scope.
