About The Position

Under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, the Surgical Support Aide provides support services that include but are not limited to general nursing care and other tasks that support the clinical operations of the operating rooms and Post Anesthesia Recovery Room. This includes running errands, transporting patients, prepping, shaving, and positioning of patients. The role also involves obtaining special equipment for procedures and performing the cleaning of the operating rooms and surrounding areas.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/ GED
  • At least 1 year previous hospital experience as a CNA, Surgical Transport, Central Service Technician, or Instrument Technician.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Service Orientation — actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Critical Thinking — using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Nice To Haves

  • A solid understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient transportation throughout the surgical suite.
  • Assists with the transfer of patients from surgical tables to gurneys or beds at the end of procedures.
  • Assists the nurse and anesthesiologist with transporting patients to the Recovery Room.
  • Provides assistance to the circulating nurse during patient prepping by supporting extremities or pouring prep solutions while maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Assists with between-case clean-up and preparation for following cases, ensuring a safe patient environment.
  • Assists with cleaning and movement of furniture, equipment, and floors, utilizing universal precautions.
  • Assists with clean-up and disposition of used instruments and equipment.
  • Anticipates and obtains needed equipment for assigned procedures, sets up, and pre-checks for proper function. Equipment includes but is not limited to microscopes, video towers, video cameras, and fracture tables.
  • Maintains awareness of equipment and safety hazards to prevent equipment damage or harm to patients.
  • Routinely inspects and maintains equipment.
  • Picks and/or completes picking up supplies for cases utilizing computer-generated pick lists or preference cards.
  • Serves as an additional resource person in the provision of patient care as procedures require the need for additional personnel.
  • Provides support for the anesthesia department through stocking and maintaining of carts.
  • Inventories and stocks operating rooms with supplies as assigned.
  • Participates in training of new personnel.
  • Attends staff development activities including staff meetings and in-services (Minimum of 80%).
  • Participates in assigned Performance Improvement projects including correction of deficiencies (80% participation in appropriate projects).
  • Other duties as assigned.
