About The Position

The Surgical Technician assists surgeons and other members of the surgical team in the operating room, ensuring a sterile environment and supporting the safe, efficient completion of surgical procedures. This role is responsible for preparation of surgical instruments and supplies, maintenance of sterile technique, assistance during surgical procedures, and the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, storage, and distribution of medical instruments and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program, Practical Nursing program, or Registered Nursing program.
  • Current LPN or RN license if functioning under a nursing license.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification active or obtained within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred but not required.
  • One to two years of experience in surgical services, sterile processing, or a related healthcare role preferred.
  • Knowledge of sterilization methods, infection prevention practices, and instrument handling preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and basic computer applications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room with necessary sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist the surgical team by handing instruments, holding retractors, and anticipating surgeons’ needs during procedures.
  • Ensure the sterile field is maintained throughout surgical procedures.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning, draping, and skin preparation.
  • Assist in preparing and transporting patients as directed.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to surgical procedures and instrument processing activities.
  • Assist in cleaning and disinfecting operating rooms and surgical equipment following procedures.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and report maintenance needs.
  • Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and store surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment according to established procedures and infection prevention standards.
  • Operate detergents, disinfectants, antiseptic solutions, washers, and semi-automatic or automatic sterilization equipment according to manufacturer and facility guidelines.
  • Disassemble instruments and equipment for cleaning and sterilization and reassemble them following processing.
  • Verify sterility indicators and maintain sterilization logs and records.
  • Label, date, stock, and properly store sterilized instruments and supplies.
  • Collect contaminated instruments and equipment from patient care departments and return sterilized items as needed.
  • Maintain inventory levels of surgical and sterile processing supplies and notify leadership of supply needs.
  • Fill supply requisitions, record charges, and assist with inventory management activities.
  • Follow all hospital policies, including infection control, patient confidentiality, and safety protocols.
  • Order and maintain surgical supplies, ensuring availability for procedures.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement and regulatory compliance activities.
