About The Position

Plans, prepares, and provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations using the nursing process. Addresses the psycho-social, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement activities. Responsible for monitoring patient's physiological status in the immediate post-operative environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist; receives direction for patient management. Intercedes to maintain optimum homeostasis. Handles confidential information regarding patient records, department, and hospital activities. Makes daily nursing judgments and moderate to hard decisions involving interpretation of general policy and procedure. Has some input into budget regarding equipment. Inter-relates with other departments personnel on a daily basis. Performs all work in accordance with the mission, visions, and values of Ashe Memorial Hospital (AMH).

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in Nursing.
  • Must be licensed a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of NC.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • ACLS certification.
  • PALS certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in OR and PACU preferred.

  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Conducts pre- and post-operative education.
  • Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team.
  • Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs.
  • Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed.
  • Provides basic, bedside care.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a RN.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Preps operating room for patient/procedure.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting.
  • Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient.
  • Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens.
  • Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis.
  • Observes, checks, and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly.
  • Handles patient documentation.
  • Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.
  • Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon.
  • Delivers direct surgical care by assisting physicians.
  • Helps control bleeding.
  • Provides wound exposure.
  • Sutures patients after the surgery.
  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility.
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Follows facility and GHR Unusual Occurrence Protocol.
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations.
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).
  • All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption).
