About The Position

Ortho Sport & Spine Physician is seeking two Surgical Liaison RNs for their unique surgery center. This role is administrative and serves as the crucial link between the doctor and the patient throughout their care journey, which can last up to a year. The RN Surgical Liaison will guide patients from their initial appointment through their final recovery, ensuring they understand their treatment plan, surgical procedures, and post-operative care. This position involves significant patient interaction, primarily over the phone, and requires strong organizational and EMR skills. The practice focuses on patients with legal settlements for injuries and does not file with insurance companies. The work environment is described as familial, with a supportive and long-tenured team.

Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in the state of practice.
  • BLS Certificate
  • Ability to conduct medical and clinical conversations with patients and care teams using sound nursing judgment.
  • Strong patient education skills, including the ability to explain clinical information clearly and compassionately.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and follow-through, with the ability to manage multiple patients at different stages of care.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Great EMR skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and recognize when patient concerns require provider evaluation.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented and like talking with patients.
  • Dependable and empathetic.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a similar surgical liaison, surgical coordination, preoperative clearance, specialty practice, or perioperative nursing role.
  • Experience with surgical patient education, telephone screening, postoperative follow-up, or medication coordination.
  • Familiarity with eClinicalWorks is a plus, but not a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient conversations after surgery is ordered, explaining the surgical process, the details of the planned procedure, and recovery expectations in accordance with the provider's treatment plan.
  • Answer medical and clinical questions within RN scope, reinforce provider instructions, and refer questions requiring further evaluation to the appropriate clinician.
  • Communicate financial denial decisions to patients with professionalism and empathy.
  • When surgery is financially denied, arrange for the patient to return to the ordering provider for conservative treatment.
  • Coordinate postoperative prescriptions with the prescribing provider and appropriate pharmacy, ensuring prescribed medications are communicated to the pharmacy and confirming availability.
  • Confirm that local patients have picked up their medications and that pharmacy pickup is scheduled for patients traveling from out of town.
  • Complete the pre-surgery screening telephone call, document findings, and communicate concerns to the appropriate clinical team.
  • Contact patients two days after surgery and again two weeks after surgery to check on recovery, address questions within RN scope, and escalate concerns as appropriate.
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation of patient education, screening calls, medication coordination, follow-up conversations, and clinical handoffs.
  • Work closely with the doctors and staff.
  • Research and investigate cases, digging deeper into patient situations.
  • Be on the phones a lot.
  • Serve as an approachable clinical resource for patients.
  • Work closely with providers, the Surgical Coordinator, the Clearance Coordinator, and pharmacies to keep patients informed and prepared.
