About The Position

The Surgical Inventory Coordinator/Specialist explores strategies to meet patient & surgeon’s case needs with cooperation of the team to maintain a safe efficient workflow at the Outpatient Surgery Center. Collaborates with Materials Management, staff physicians, and nursing staff utilizing the critical pathway, as available to guide the patient through the peri-operative stage in the most efficient, safe, and cost-effective manner. Provides input for staffing, performance, evaluation, health team coordination, and support for staff. In addition, it is expected that the BOSC Surgical Inventory Coordinator/Specialist continue to meet the competency requirement (as documented through competency review) of a Lead Central Service Reprocessing Technician. The Surgical Inventory Coordinator/Specialist will obtain a working knowledge of infection control and how it pertains to surgical instrumentation and equipment. Will be certified CS technician or successful scrub technician and demonstrate leadership skills in the processing and the operating room. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. If formally trained as a surgical scrub technician, acts as a scrub technician as needed within the department.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• 3-5 years surgery process room experience required.
• Central Service Certification required or completion of Surgical Technologist program required.
• Successful completion of the organization, unit, and job specific competencies within a reasonable orientation period.
• Must be able to practice within the guidelines of the Surgical and RSS policies and procedures.
• Must be able to work in and cope with changing environment and be able to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Must be able to manage several job tasks simultaneously and be able to function effectively under high stress situations.
• Must have the ability to analyze data and set appropriate plan of action.
• Ability to read and interpret data from equipment and computer.
• Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills including verbal and written communication, problem solving, advocacy, and assertiveness skills.
• Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills including the ability to work independently and take initiative is necessary.
• Must be able to mentor a team as well as be a team member and independently resolve team conflicts resulting in positive outcomes.
• Must use AAMI and AORN guidelines in decision making.
• Knowledge of instrumentation and sterilization.
• Ability to gather data and set appropriate plan of action, in coordination with RN, and within the scope of the Central Service Tech role.
• Ability to communicate in an easily understood, grammatically correct manner, in English.

• Responsible for work schedules and daily work assignments of staff.
• Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines.
• Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
• Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

Responsibilities

• Acts as an expert resource to staff.
• Performs and initial comprehensive assessment of surgery schedule and materials to determine if these meet case needs and physician’s requirements.
• Complete comprehensive assessment of materials and resources required for case needs, across multi-specialties.
• Works directly with physicians, staff, and other departments to meet perioperative needs and overcome obstacles to operating room discharge delays.
• Collaborates with Unit Coordinator about staff assignments and staff scheduling.
• Assist staff with maintaining their individual competencies.
• Identifies need for and arranges procurement of materials from community resources.
• Assumes responsibility for professional development.
• Acts as entity Tissue Coordinator assuming documentation to assure patient safety and meet regulatory compliance of implanted tissue.
• Audits weekly compliance of tissue documentation and oversees RN corrections.
• Collaborates with System Tissue Coordinator.
• Performs weekly inventory reconciliation of tissue.
• Acts as entity laser safety officer assuring safe practices and regulatory compliance.
• Responsible for checking temp track parameters daily and implementing notification as needed to assure a safe environment.
• Researches and coordinates equipment, supplies, and staff education associated with new or complex procedures.
• Develops and supports a positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by unit leadership.
• Adjusts priorities as day progresses to meet unit needs.
• Accurately selects and distributes materials and instruments for the corresponding area of surgery and identifies possible reductions.
• Identifies staff needs and informs unit leadership of any problems.
• Is knowledgeable of process room policies and procedure and is resource for staff.
• Orients new personnel and/or assists designated staff with orientation and identifies needs.
• Accurately receive materials and instruments according to established receiving protocol.
• Monitor dated materials to assure that sterilization is not compromised.
• Assist in controlling utilization of materials and monitoring par levels.
• Assist in establishing profiles according to services.
• Participate in continuing education as related to the requirements of this position and keep abreast of individual responsibilities relative to JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.
• Cleans, sterilizes, stores, prepares, and issues dressing packs, treatment trays, and other supplies.
• Utilizes computer systems to acquire needed supplies and to enter data, as defined by role.
• Maintains a clean and orderly environment, ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times.
• Accurately documents all activities.
