About The Position

At Banner University Medical Center, the Surgical First Assist Cardiothoracic works with the cardiothoracic surgical team on procedures including CABG, valve replacement and repair, heart and lung transplantation, and artificial heart devices. At the direction of a surgeon, the role provides intraoperative assistance, including endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting, establishing bypass pump lines, assisting with femoral artery and vein catheter placement during surgical emergencies, maintaining hemostasis, and closing multilevel surgical sites including bone. The position also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.

The role prepares for procedures by checking schedules and case carts, gathering and checking instruments and supplies, and troubleshooting equipment. It follows aseptic technique, universal precautions, and applicable safety procedures, and supports safe, timely, effective, efficient, and equitable patient care. The position is based at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona, and is scheduled Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some nights and weekends.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent working knowledge.
• Current certification as a surgical technologist/first assist and current basic life support certification.
• Registration with the State Regulatory Agency where applicable.
• Skills and abilities typically attained with three or more years of cardiothoracic operating room experience and six or more years of CT surgery-specific experience.
• Manual dexterity and ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations.
• Ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly and respond quickly to surgeon and patient needs within scope of practice.
• Must stay abreast of new developments in the field.

Responsibilities

• Provide surgical assistance to the surgeon for perioperative patient cases and prepare for surgical procedures.
• Select instruments and supplies, check case carts, ensure instruments are in good working order, troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, and plan for upcoming cases.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs; assist with hemostasis, pass instruments, retract tissue, use appropriate instruments, and place ties and suture ligatures as directed.
• Follow aseptic technique and universal precautions; dispose of sharps and trash, participate in counts of sharps, instruments, and sponges, and prepare instruments for cleaning.
• Assist with the plan of care under physician direction and provide care according to physician orders, policies, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
• Support cardiothoracic procedures, including CABG, minimally invasive and open valve replacement or repair, heart and lung transplantation, and artificial heart devices.
• Assist with establishing bypass pump lines, place femoral artery and vein catheters during a surgical emergency, harvest vein and radial artery endoscopically, and close multilevel surgical sites including bone.
• Serve as a first assistant in the operating room and follow safety procedures for medication labeling, specimen and sharps handling, time-outs, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and instrument assembly and disassembly.
• Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.
