About The Position

Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, functions in the first or second assistant role. Does not function concurrently as a scrub tech. Knowledge of anatomy, instrumentation, patient safety and sterile technique. Our state-of-the-art hospital in Jacksonville includes 34 operating rooms that include an IMRI OR suite and a dedicated endovascular OR suite. We use the best modern equipment and advanced technologies to create an environment that merges the art of healing with the science of medicine. Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certification as a surgical first assistant or completion of surgical specialty checklist for assigned areas within six months of hire.
  • Minimum three to five years in the surgical scrub role.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Ability to identify the pattern of surgical approach and to anticipates steps of a surgical procedure and the first or second assistant role during each step.
  • Recognizes and names surgical instruments and specific intraoperative situations where they are used, as well as alternative instruments that may be used.
  • Knowledge of principles of surgical asepsis and recommended practices governing exposure to bloodborne pathogens and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal direction.
  • Ability to visualize the surgical site.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.

Nice To Haves

  • More than five years of recent Surgical Tech experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience and technical proficiency in the First Surgical Assistant role preferred.
  • Experience in General and robotic procedures strongly preferred.
  • CST Certification through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.
  • Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Performs safe and effective exposure, tissue handling, hemostasis, and wound closure that minimize potential tissue injury and protect the patient.
