About The Position

Lexington Regional Health Center is seeking a full-time Surgical Services Registered Nurse to join their team. This role is responsible for administering patient-centered nursing care according to the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) guidelines. The nurse will consult and coordinate with healthcare team members, prepare the department for patients and surgical cases, ensure correct patient and procedure, and care for the needs of surgical patients and staff. Responsibilities include maintaining the sterile field, recovering and discharging patients, cleaning and preparing the surgical suite, assisting with patient positioning, handling specimens, observing asepsis standards, monitoring equipment, documenting patient care, and inventorying items. The role also involves maintaining medical records, providing holistic support and education to patients and their support systems, supervising less skilled personnel, evaluating patient care plans, and participating in patient care activities that may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens and biohazardous waste. The nurse must follow safe injection practices, ensure the environment meets governing body standards, and maintain patient and staff safety using tools like TeamSTEPPS and Just Culture. Communication with the multidisciplinary team and maintaining harmonious relationships within the department are also key aspects of this position. Regular attendance is required, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of nursing theory and practice and the growth and development of a variety of patients in order to meet the patients' health care needs as is typically acquired through the completion of an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
  • Must hold a current active Registered Nurse license from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.
  • Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications via American Heart Association required within six months of hire and/or orientation.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with regard to protected and sensitive information.
  • Ability to complete reports and correspondence at a professional level.
  • Ability to immediately respond to common inquiries and complaints from patients, employees, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Successful completion of required knowledge and training of standard precaution and transmission protocols and when to apply during principle duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Administers patient-centered nursing care according to AORN guidelines.
  • Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Reviews and evaluates the completeness of the medical chart.
  • Prepares and reviews the department's readiness for patients and surgical cases with personnel.
  • Ensures operating on the correct patient and that the correct procedure is being performed.
  • Takes care of the needs of the surgical patient and staff during the surgical procedure.
  • Observes and maintains the integrity of the sterile field.
  • Recovers and discharges patients after surgical procedures.
  • Helps with cleaning and preparing the surgical suite for the next surgical case.
  • Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient during surgery.
  • Provides accurate care and handling of specimens during surgery.
  • Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis during surgery.
  • Observes, checks, and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly.
  • Handles patient documentation during surgery.
  • Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.
  • Maintains medical record documentation to accurately reflect care administered and patient's condition.
  • Provides holistic support to patients and patient designated support system.
  • Educates patients and designated support system on a plan of care.
  • Provides accurate and detailed handoff to staff to ensure consistency and continuity of care.
  • Supervises less skilled nursing healthcare personnel.
  • Evaluates and implements patient care plans.
  • Assumes role and responsibility of Patient Educator as needed.
  • Participates in patient care activities that could include blood exposure and risk to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Responsible for safe bagging and disposal of biohazardous waste.
  • Responsible for following safe-injection practices.
  • Responsible for ensuring the environment meets appropriate governing body standards.
  • Ensure patients and visitors follow current infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains patient and staff safety through the use of patient safety tools (TeamSTEPPS, Just Culture, etc).
  • Participates in shared governance committee as requested.
  • Communicates with multidisciplinary team to ensure patient-centered holistic care.
  • Represents the facility accurately, honestly, and acts with integrity and in the best interest of the facility while practicing by the mission and vision.
  • Maintains harmonious relationships within the department and among coworkers, providing support and assistance to co-workers to ensure quality patient care.
  • Regular attendance at the assigned work location is required.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
