Under the general direction of the surgeons at Saint Anne's Hospital, the physician assistant manages patients in Inpatient and operating room settings. The physician assistant will manage surgical inpatients for various specialties including but not limited to: general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, bariatric surgery, and vascular surgery. Inpatient management includes: admissions, consults, daily rounds, order management, and discharge planning/coordination. The role involves communicating and coordinating effectively with the supervising physician and other health professionals, as well as clearly communicating with patients and their families. The physician assistant will provide superior customer service, identify and assess problems while interviewing and examining patients, and order and interpret lab and imaging studies, prescribe medications, complete paperwork, and formulate treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising physician. Additionally, the role includes providing pre and post-operative patient education, acting as a surgical first assist for a variety of cases including neurosurgery and orthopedics, managing post-operative patients in PACU, floor, or ICU, and covering some evening phone calls, rotating weekend coverage, and potentially covering first call from an answering service. The physician assistant will perform Basic and Advanced Life Support measures as necessary, participate in data collection and research as directed, report immediately to the supervising physician any deviation of normal operations, and participate in the Hospital Incident Reporting System and other risk management activities. The role requires abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures, demonstrating respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees, and recognizing and respecting cultural diversity for all customers. Effective communication with internal and external customers, respecting differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, and utilizing interpreters when needed is essential. Shifts are 4 x 10 hrs, days.
