About The Position

We are seeking a Surface Shop Mechanic for our mine operations near Brookwood, Alabama. We expect this person to be a role model for the "Warrior Way" and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork. As a Shop Mechanic at our mine repair shop and other associated mining locations, you will perform various tasks such as welding, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining machinery and equipment such as production hoists, Service Hoists, mine fans, trucks, and other similar equipment. The Surface Shop Mechanic will work closely with supervisors and other team members to maintain a safe work environment while adhering to company policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Alabama certified hoist operator required (must obtain certifications within 3 months of being awarded Job
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in industrial maintenance, preferably in surface and/or underground mining, construction, or similar industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrain components.
  • Must be able to pass welding, mechanical and hydraulic test administered by the company.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required MSHA certifications.
  • Surface coal mining maintenance experience.
  • MSHA Part 46 or Part 48 Surface and Underground Miner Training.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals and equipment schematics.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Excellent welding and fabrication skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must be able to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must be able to walk for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Will need to walk through different areas of the work area with different amounts of clearance and headroom.
  • Must have ability and willingness to work in confined areas under extreme temperatures and wet muddy conditions.
  • Walking ability will be based on SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
  • Must be able to wear the required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must be able to bend or stoop for a full work period because of varying work heights.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must be able to do repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have quick reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must be able to lift 25 to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Working from heights often in excess of 2000’ with Safety harness requiring 100% tie off at all times
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Maintain and repair, service trucks, forklifts, and light vehicles.
  • Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and hydraulic diagrams.
  • Complete work orders and maintenance documentation accurately.
  • Inspect equipment to identify safety concerns and potential failures.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and component replacement as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Assist with field repairs when required.
  • Coordinate with operations personnel to prioritize equipment repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with MSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and assist in managing repair parts.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of Safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
