About The Position

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Surface Maintenance Mechanic - Trainee and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a USW bargaining unit position. This position will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) before any other candidate considerations.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalency is required.
  • Four (4) years of relevant mechanical maintenance experience in a commercial or industrial environment or four (4) years of industrial maintenance training/education is required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).

Nice To Haves

  • Mining and diesel mechanic experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on diesel and electric mobile equipment, hoisting equipment, mining equipment, and waste handling equipment at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
  • Attain and maintain the qualifications and training necessary to perform field maintenance.
  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations and policies.
  • Promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions to management.
  • Maintain qualifications and training to perform assigned duties.
  • Be able to pass a Pulmonary Function Test to qualify and work in a respirator in contaminated areas.
