About The Position

VOA Northern California & Northern Nevada is a large provider of social services, transforming lives and meeting the needs of families, individuals, veterans, seniors, and youth. They are a Certified Great Place to Work, recruiting for a part-time overnight Support Staff for the Family Shelter at their Parker House program. Parker House is an 85-bed facility providing short-term emergency housing (up to 30 days) and intensive supportive services for homeless families with dependent children. This position will be between the hours of 10:30pm and 7:00am, Monday through Thursday.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and people with disabilities.
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Willingness to function as a team member.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Must pass all required background clearances.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Assure quality service in a safe, non-judgmental manner to all program participants compassionately and professionally.
  • Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate residents’ observance of the rules.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines.
  • Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain grounds security.
  • Conduct hourly safety and security checks during designated periods.
  • De-escalate crisis before it develops and respond to crisis in an appropriate manner, providing emergency assistance to clients and co-workers as necessary.
  • Maintain daily reports to provide statistical information.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Prepare rooms for next resident; maintain/monitor staff area cleanliness to meet health/sanitation requirements.
  • Respond to all client questions.
  • Perform clerical duties on shift, such as answering the telephone, recording messages, and filing.
  • Maintain clear, thorough, routine communication with all residents.
  • Support VOA staff in implementing plans to assist residents in successful program completion.
  • Role model positive behavior to help clients work towards self-sufficiency.
  • Document and report all client concerns and/or infractions that can impact program security.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Monitor inventory of program equipment and supplies and take appropriate action to replace or restock as needed.
  • Secure approval for exceptions to standard operating procedures.
  • Notify management of potential workflow problems and resource needs.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Communicate with on-site staff, Program Manager, service providers, and external program representatives as required.
  • Direct available resources as needed.
  • Comprehend and adhere to ethical standards, program philosophy guidelines, and confidentiality laws.
  • Assist the Program Manager in department orientation and training of new employees.
  • Identify appropriate ongoing training for new and existing staff and report needs to management.
  • Serve as part of the development team by providing information and support for quality operations.
  • Maintain an above average working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings/assigned training and complete required certifications, i.e. CPR, First Aid, etc.
