About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA NCNN) is seeking a Variable hour Support Staff for the El Dorado Navigation Center team in Placerville, CA. This 60-bed shelter, in partnership with El Dorado County, provides a safe haven for adults experiencing homelessness, offering case management and housing assistance with the ultimate goal of transitioning guests into independent living. The Support Staff plays a crucial role in ensuring quality service delivery to program guests in a compassionate and professional manner, aligning with specific program objectives. This involves engaging with guests and team members, assessing guest needs, and performing all required job duties efficiently and with a service-oriented approach, adhering to established organizational standards.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to difficult guests without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • Ability to use evidence-based practices to end homelessness.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Ability to function effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Tact, discretion, and resourcefulness are required at all times.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist guests and staff in emergencies.

  • Lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Physically able to safely maneuver weight distribution of a guest in an emergency situation.

  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, sit frequently, and kneel occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific knowledge and experience with Twelve Step philosophy, mental illness, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for guests using a trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approach.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and ensure compliance.
  • Continuously reorient guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide awake shift coverage and maintain grounds security and safety at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Offer emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, such as changing light bulbs, plunging toilets, and cleaning up accidents/messes.
  • Prepare for new guests by sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, including restroom and laundry areas, and staff areas both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address any behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Escalate pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating professional behavior, appearance, and communication.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policy that could affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to ensure adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to ensure a safe work environment for guests and all personnel.
