About The Position

The Support Services Shelver is a part-time, non-exempt position responsible for sorting, shelving, and shifting library materials. This role assists with the overall maintenance and orderliness of the library's collections and public areas. The position also involves assisting with department opening and closing procedures, operating library systems, directing patrons, and supporting librarians with special projects. The role requires enforcing library policies, responding to emergencies, and maintaining flexibility in work schedule to cover staffing needs. Effective communication, collaboration, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential. The position requires adaptability to multiple priorities and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older. Applicants 16-17 years of age must have an eligible work permit on file before employment can start.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical, numerical and decimal systems of arrangement.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Google Workspace, internet browsers and other computer related technologies.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Dedication to public service and providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to organize work, set priorities and manage projects to completion.
  • Enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable.
  • Strong obligation to confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to speak multiple languages helpful.
  • May require a valid Michigan driver's license based on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Sort and load carts for shelving.
  • Shelve and shift materials in public areas.
  • Shelf read.
  • Report problems with shelf organization to the Support Services Supervisor.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for the Support Services Department.
  • Assist with the overall maintenance and orderliness of the Library's collections, display areas, and department areas.
  • Assist other Support Services staff with operations of the ILS Module and the AST System.
  • Direct patrons to reference staff for assistance.
  • Assist Librarians with special projects with the approval of the Support Services Supervisor.
  • Retain knowledge and stay up-to-date on current Library policies and procedures.
  • Enforce Library policies relevant to public use; respond to emergencies and provide support, as needed; act quickly, exercising good judgment.
  • Maintain flexibility in work schedule to accommodate changing department staffing coverage requirements and make up of hours due to Library closures.
  • Communicate effectively with patrons, co-workers and professional colleagues.
  • Work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish departmental and Library goals.
  • Foster and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
  • Adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands; resolve problems in a positive manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
