About The Position

The Supplier Quality and Development Engineer serves as a liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and the global supply base. The role ensures robust launch execution and ongoing quality performance of supplier-provided components by leading APQP, executing PPAP and Run at Rate, and driving systemic supplier problem solving. If needed, the engineer may also serve as Global Commodity Lead, representing Supplier Quality and Development at the Engineering Creativity Team and supporting Business Over Time and sourcing package activities. The position leads supplier launch and quality activities, evaluates supplier processes and submissions, monitors performance, and partners with cross-functional teams to support design changes, risk mitigation, and launch readiness. It also involves domestic travel of approximately 40–50% to supplier manufacturing locations and GM facilities. The role is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week or at another frequency directed by their manager. The position is not eligible for relocation benefits. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related) or an equivalent technical degree such as Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry.
  • At least 2 years of experience in supplier quality, quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, or product engineering, preferably in the automotive or a closely related industry.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with APQP, PPAP, Run@Rate, control plans, PFMEA, Measurement System Analysis, and Statistical Process Control.
  • Proficiency in print reading, GD&T, gage design and selection, part measurement, or applying dimensional data to decision-making.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes, tooling, automation, and process controls.
  • Ability to use probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments for problem solving and process optimization.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams, influence without direct authority, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and effectively with suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, and leadership at multiple levels.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly and actionably to technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • Automotive supplier quality experience with direct responsibility for APQP/PPAP on complex components, such as electrical/electronic modules or PCBAs.
  • Knowledge of PCBA manufacturing processes, including SMT, through-hole assembly, soldering, inspection, and common quality defects.
  • Formal training or certification in Red X, Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, or equivalent structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience leading suppliers through significant launch, ramp-up, or recovery situations, including containment, third-party inspection management, and escalation processes.
  • Demonstrated success coaching suppliers to build robust quality management systems, improve process capability, and institutionalize layered process audits and error-proofing.
  • Strong data analytics skills, including Excel, statistical tools, or visualization, to identify patterns, prioritize issues, and monitor corrective-action effectiveness.
  • Experience in global, multicultural environments and ability to adapt communication and leadership styles across regions and cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve supplier quality deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEAs, Control Plans, MSA, and capability studies, for alignment with GM standards and customer-specific requirements.
  • Review and approve PPAP and Run@Rate submissions, confirming process capacity, stability, and control of key characteristics before production release.
  • Monitor supplier performance using quality metrics including PPM, SPPS, PRTS, warranty, and launch issues, and drive continuous improvement through action plans and workshops.
  • Lead structured problem solving, such as Red X, 7 Diamonds, and 8D/SPPS, for supplier-related issues from containment through root cause analysis and long-term corrective action.
  • Conduct on-site supplier assessments and process reviews to verify manufacturing process capability, quality management system robustness, and compliance with IATF 16949 and GM customer-specific requirements.
  • Partner with Design Release Engineering, Manufacturing, Plant Quality, Purchasing, and Launch teams on design changes, risk mitigation, and launch readiness.
  • Develop and share lessons learned across programs and commodities to prevent systemic issues and strengthen Supplier Quality and Development standard work.
