About The Position

Joining the Secret Service, Office of Field Operations, Criminal Investigative Division will allow you to direct the provision of a full range of counterfeit currency forensic services to the organization and its components. The selectee will serve as a Supervisory Physical Scientist in the Office of Field Operations, Criminal Investigative Division. Typical work assignments include: Serving as an advisor to stakeholders on the conceptualization, development, and presentation of anticounterfeiting policy, forensic and statistical analysis related to counterfeiting. Advising stakeholders on various forensic and physical science issues. Developing scientific standard operations procedures for forensic analysis, counterfeit detection, authentication, or security feature assessment. Leading or supervising counterfeit projects, or a team of counterfeit specialists. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Obtain and maintain a Top Secret Tier 5 clearance.
  • Submit to random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Submit a financial disclosure report.
  • Subject to a one-year probationary period for supervisors/managers.
  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period or 2-year trial period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
  • OR Combination of education and experience-education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level performing duties such as: Leading a technical program involving the evaluation of counterfeit or questioned materials.
  • Advising stakeholders on various forensic and physical science issues.
  • Developing scientific standard operations procedures for forensic analysis, counterfeit detection, authentication, or security feature assessment.
  • Leading or supervising counterfeit projects, or a team of counterfeit specialists.
  • Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying).
  • Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to current competitive service employees applying for a Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
  • Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
