About The Position

Maintains the day-to-day operations of the Routing and Athletic/Excursions teams for all of the transportation department. Ensures procedures in accordance with Federal, State, local laws and regulations (e.g. Colorado Department of Education (CDE)); Denver Public Schools (DPS) training, policies and procedures; and safety rules and regulations. This is a working supervisory position where bus driving may be required. Note: This is a safety-sensitive position within the DPS School District and mandatory position requirements include: a copy of current Driving Record at time of hire, clear CBI criminal/background investigation and compliance with Drug Free/Pre-hire and Random Drug testing conducted throughout duration of assignment.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED
  • Three years experience in the transportation industry or related industry
  • One year experience in a supervisory, leadership or management position in a transportation organization
  • Commercial driver’s license (with PS2 endorsements) is required or able to be acquired within 6 months.
  • Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle.
  • Must pass Department of Transportation physical (DOT).
  • Must be certified by Red Cross for CPR (within 90 days after employment).
  • Outstanding facilitation and communication skills, including ability to inspire others
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local student transportation laws and regulations
  • Ability to effectively lead a team
  • Ability to set goals, work independently and drive results
  • Self-starter/leader who can anticipate department needs in a proactive (versus, reactive) manner
  • High degree of integrity in handling confidential information
  • Ability to communicate with diverse student population and work effectively with diverse staff at all levels, in all departments
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace
  • Knowledge of special needs equipment use and installation
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions quickly according to guidelines with consideration of safety and health of others.
  • Knowledge of the locations and routes to all DPS facilities and other landmarks and streets in Denver

Responsibilities

  • Schedules day-to-day operations of the Routing and Athletics/Excursions teams in accordance with District policy.
  • Evaluates DPS transportation services and ensures consistency with School Board policy; reviews and follows Federal, State and Local rules and regulations and procedures applicable to passenger transportation
  • Acts a liaison for contracted vendors of student transportation
  • Establishes KPIs with Routing Manager and communicates KPI results and adjusts router/coordinator assignments as needed; conducts route reviews for the entire team
  • Maintains and schedules software backups and schedules software systems maintenance
  • Monitors and track submitted forms (e.g., 1066, Trip Requests..) to ensure completion and accuracy
  • Adjusts daily schedule and work assignments to ensure transportation services are not delayed or interrupted
  • Prepares and conducts new employee briefings; trains and coaches new routing team members in a variety of areas and provide feedback on performance
  • Communicates safety and related information, including the enforcement of the controlled substance testing program; communicates with school personnel, parents or guardians of students regarding route and safety concerns
  • Follows safety rules during bus operations (e.g., loading, unloading and street crossing) at bus stops and school drop-off locations; manages passenger and student behavior using student management skills to ensure safety
  • Reports incidents of suspected child abuse as well as incidents of reasonable suspicion
  • Performs other duties as assigned
