About The Position

The Supervisor Sterile Processing is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of daily Sterile Processing Department (SPD) operations. This role coordinates daily staffing and schedules to ensure appropriate coverage based on surgical volume and department needs, including PTO approvals. The supervisor assigns team members to work areas based on competency, workload, and operational priorities, and maintains workflow to ensure timely instrument processing, case cart assembly, and OR support. They monitor staff productivity, accuracy, and timeliness to meet departmental expectations, facilitate daily huddles and departmental meetings, and prepare agendas and communicate updates to staff and leadership. This position promotes and models Advocate Health’s Behaviors of Excellence, supports quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance, and ensures adherence to infection prevention, sterilization, and safety standards. The supervisor promotes a culture of safety by identifying, reporting, and addressing issues through established channels, and participates in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives. They lead or support performance improvement efforts, including data collection, trend analysis, and implementation of action plans. Collaboration with OR leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams is key to improving processes and patient outcomes. The supervisor also coordinates departmental workflow and interdepartmental communication, maintains efficient department flow, monitors and assists with OR turnover activities and instrument availability, and ensures effective communication with OR staff and other departments to support patient care needs. In partnership with SPD leadership/educator, they manage inventory, equipment, and case cart readiness. This role manages human resources activities for assigned staff, including participation in recruitment, interviewing, and hiring decisions, providing coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing staff development, conducting performance evaluations and competency assessments, and addressing employee relations concerns, including corrective action, in partnership with the SPD Manager. They maintain accurate employee records and support professional development planning. Additionally, the supervisor supports strategic and operational planning, collaborates with SPD leadership in developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures, participates in budget planning and management of departmental resources, and contributes to achieving operational goals aligned with Advocate Health and hospital objectives. They also support the principles of Shared Governance and organizational initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • Current Certification as a Central Service Technologist/Surgical Technician
  • 3 to 4 years of Sterile Processing experience
  • 3 years of lead/coordinator experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to delegate assignments efficiently
  • Proficient computer skills including reports
  • Must be able to make prompt and effective decisions
  • Ability to instruct/teach others
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
  • Ability to work with divers staff
  • Ability to act in a lead capacity
  • Experience in operating sterilizer and monitoring equipment
  • Completion of required health screenings (e.g., TB testing, immunizations)
