About The Position

Supports patient care by monitoring the quality of sterile supplies and the decontamination of equipment, per departmental policies/procedures and in accordance with pertinent hospital policies and governmental regulatory agencies. To plan, assign, and supervise employees engaged in performing a variety of services involved in the ordering processing, receiving and distribution of medical and patient equipment and supplies. Maintain tracking system, collect and report departmental metrics. Assist manager with staff scheduling, participate in department staffing as needed. Coordinate in-servicing and staff education.

Requirements

  • High School graduate with 5 years' preferred experience in central sterilization
  • Certified Operating Room Technician preferred.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, basic computer experience, and knowledge of principles of microbiology, sterilization and aseptic techniques, instrumentation and equipment, and inventory control resource in the area of sterilization technology.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials handling, infection prevention and a strong understanding of the industry standards as stated by The Joint Commission, AMMI, AORN, CDC and OSHA ( 29 CFR 1910.103) required.
  • Two (2) years previous supervisory experience in healthcare required.
  • If not certified, certification will be required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator Designation (Required): (Refer to CP 1.51) Employees in this position: Will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose

  • Surgical Technology degree or advanced certification as a CSPDM or CHL.

Responsibilities

  • Assures that proper cleaning, disinfection, & sterilization parameters are consistently met and monitored.
  • High quality instruments are consistently produced and delivered to the SPD customer.
  • Sterilization records are reviewed and signed off on in a timely manner.
  • Results from daily biological cultures are received and reviewed daily.
  • Instrument and supplies are not released for patient care use until cleared by sterile supply staff.
  • Departments are notified immediately if recall of sterile supplies is necessary to eliminate adverse patient events.
  • Instrument tracking systems is maintained and utilized in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Develop and grow a department culture where quality, service and safety are paramount by ensuring that sterilization is carried out in compliance with state, Federal and applicable accreditation laws/guidelines.
  • Confirm staff adhere to department policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with staff to assess and develop plans to eliminate system barriers to the efficient delivery of sterile processing services.
  • Maintains standards for quality control and infection control within the department.
  • Promote Sterile Processing services employee engagement strategy to insure an engaged and committed work force by supporting the rewards and recognition committee insuring business unit participation.
  • Serve as an ambassador to staff facilitating and promoting collaboration and teamwork.
  • Maintain visibility in all areas of the department, engage staff to insure that they have the tools needed to perform their job, and that staff are recognized for exceptional contributions.

  • Understands processing times and instrumentation requests, assuring that the departments inventory is adequate.
