About The Position

Supervises the activities of the respiratory therapy services team. This role involves assisting management with the supervision of clinical and clerical staff, coordinating patient care, developing and distributing daily work assignments and monthly schedules, ensuring staffing and delegate assignments, and updating clinical staff on new policies and procedures. The supervisor ensures the implementation and monitors the effectiveness of policies and procedures, and ensures equipment is in good service and operated safely and properly by staff. Additionally, this role assists in the development and implementation of department-specific staff educational activities, collaborates with leadership on educational needs, and assesses new employee learning needs to develop orientation and education plans. The supervisor also defines and coordinates orientation for new employees, ensures unit compliance with regulatory agency requirements (OSHA, CLIA, Joint Commission), and collaborates in developing department-specific standards, policies, procedures, protocols, documentation, and forms. Effective communication with leadership, medical staff, patients, and other departments is crucial for problem identification and resolution. The role provides input on hiring, retention, interviewing, and recruitment, offers ongoing feedback and coaching to employees, and assists with performance reviews. Responsibilities also include assisting with equipment and medical supply orders, understanding clinical service contracts, and resolving patient complaints. The supervisor may also perform clinical Staff Respiratory Therapist duties when necessary.

Requirements

  • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: OH: Licensed Respiratory Therapist through the Ohio Respiratory Care Board PA: Respiratory Therapist through Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine WV: Licensed Respiratory Therapist Registered (LRTR) through the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Three (3) years of respiratory experience in a hospital setting
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level) ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE, Point of Care Technician through the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources
  • Requires good interpersonal communication skills when in contact with public, patients, staff and physicians.
  • Requires multi-tasking, problem solving and decision making abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree from an academic institution in a related major.
  • Advanced credentials from National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists management with the supervision of clinical and clerical staff and the coordination of patient care and help develop and distribute daily work assignments and monthly schedules as needed.
  • Ensures staffing, delegate assignments, updates clinical staff on new clinical and information technology policies/procedures. Supervisor will ensure implementation, and monitor effectiveness policies and procedures.
  • Ensure equipment is in good service and operated safely and properly by staff.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of department specific staff educational activities within the scope of practice.
  • Collaborates with Director/Manager and support staff using indicators, such as, regulatory agencies, new policy development, new technology, patient case study and quality assurance monitors, to prioritize educational needs.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in the assessment of new departmental employee learning needs and development of employee orientation and education plan to ensure consistency in implementation validation and documentation methodologies.
  • Assists departmental or unit teams in the development of annual competency analysis system requirements and criteria to assure knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary to fulfill role expectations in the institution.
  • Through daily rounds, assesses patient and staff satisfaction issues taking appropriate action to resolve.
  • Defines and coordinates orientation needs for all new department employees. Individualizes orientation with Director/Manager and evaluates orientee’s progress, and provides ongoing constructive feedback to both orientee and Director/Manager.
  • Ensure that unit complies with all regulatory agency requirements. Including but not limited to OSHA, CLIA and Joint Commission.
  • Collaborates with Director/Manager in developing department specific standards, policy, procedures, protocols, documentation, and forms.
  • Maintains effective communication with Department Leadership, Medical staff, patients, clerical staff and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide timely problem resolution in support of the hospital’s mission of quality patient care.
  • Provides input to the Director/Manager on hiring, retention, interviewing and recruitment of staff.
  • Provides on-going feedback to employees concerning job performance. Coaches and counsels employees, under the direction of the Director/Manager.
  • Assists Manager with on-going performance reviews according to hospital policy.
  • Assists with equipment ordering, medical supply orders, and has knowledge of clinical service contracts for Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Services.
  • Assists Director/Manager in resolving patient complaints.
  • Performs clinical Staff Respiratory Therapist duties whenever necessary and other duties as assigned.
